Halloween falls on a Saturday this year, which means no school the next morning, an earlier start for the little ones, and plenty of families deciding where to spend the evening. For many, the best route starts at their own front door. For others, it’s worth a short drive to the neighbourhoods that turn October 31 into something closer to a community festival.

As someone raising a family in the Okanagan, here are the streets locals point to year after year.

  1. Kettle Valley (Upper Mission) tops almost every list. Homes sit close together along walkable streets, the decorating goes all out, and one homeowner told KelownaNow she’d stocked candy for 700 after seeing 300 to 700 visitors in past years. Arrive early and expect crowds.
  2. Kimatouche Road (South East Kelowna), off Spaarpak Road, pulls families from across the city, with some homes counting around 400 trick-or-treaters at their peak. A new generation of young families is keeping the tradition going.
  3. Rutland, especially around Benchview and Dougall, is known for its front-yard spectacles. One homeowner there has welcomed as many as 200 children in a night, handing out treats beside an outdoor fire next to one of the city’s most elaborate displays.
  4. Glenmore and Black Mountain are the reliable picks, established family streets with a steady flow of open doors and a calmer pace than the busiest areas. Dilworth is another local favourite.
  5. Glenrosa (West Kelowna) anchors Halloween on the Westside, where a neighbourhood haunted display has grown into one of the area’s go-to stops.
  6. Vernon’s Treat Trail suits younger kids, a daytime route along 30th Avenue run by the Downtown Vernon Association, where downtown businesses hand out candy to kids 12 and under. Confirm this year’s hours before you go.
“Halloween offers one of the most honest snapshots of a community.”

A few habits make the night smoother. The Kelowna RCMP suggests bright or reflective costumes, a flashlight or glow sticks, face paint over masks, and keeping younger children with an adult. In the busier neighbourhoods, stick to sidewalks, cross at intersections, and visit only homes with their porch lights on.

Halloween offers one of the most honest snapshots of a community. The streets that light up on October 31 are usually the same ones with walkable sidewalks, engaged neighbours, and young families putting down roots. If you’re relocating from Vancouver or elsewhere and weighing which part of the Okanagan suits your household, a Saturday evening stroll through a few of these neighbourhoods tells you more than any listing description.
