Some neighbourhoods you pass through. Others you settle into and never want to leave. In Kelowna, Wilden has quietly become one of the latter, a master-planned hillside community where people buy their first home, raise a family, and later downsize, all without ever leaving the community they’ve come to love.

I recently spent a morning there and sat down with Jenna, the sales manager for Wilden, to understand what makes it work.

Nature at your doorstep, the city still close by. The first thing that stands out about Wilden is the setting. You’re in the heart of Kelowna, about 10 minutes from the airport and UBC Okanagan and roughly 15 minutes from downtown, yet the community is wrapped in trails, parks, ponds, and natural green spaces.

As Jenna put it, you’re close to everything: schools, shopping, pharmacies, restaurants, so much so that you barely need to leave. And because of how it’s laid out, a lot of that is walkable or bikeable. It’s a location that suits a lot of different lifestyles, whether you’re commuting, chasing kids to school, or heading out for a hike straight from your front door. If you want to see what’s currently available, you can browse homes for sale in Wilden to get a feel for the community.

Homes with personality, guided by real standards. One of my favourite parts of Wilden is walking into the presentation centres and seeing the new homes. I asked Jenna about the building trends she’s seeing, and she explained that while the community has moved away a little from the traditional craftsman style it started with, toward more modern and farmhouse-inspired looks, there are design guidelines every home stays within.

What impressed me is how those guidelines work: the select builders have a real eye for giving each home its own personality while keeping the overall community cohesive. The result is a place where the pride of ownership is obvious. You walk the streets, and you can feel it. You enter Wilden, and you know you’re in Wilden.

“It's a place where people have moved and they haven't left. ”

A community people grow with, not out of. Something Jenna said stuck with me. Wilden started as single-family homes, but the product has evolved to include townhomes and duplexes, with higher-density options planned for the future around Market Square. What that evolution allows is remarkable: someone buys their first home, has kids, moves up to a larger home, and years later, when the kids are gone, downsizes into a lock-and-leave duplex for retirement, all within Wilden.

People move as their lives change, but they stay in the community. As Jenna noted, that might be the biggest compliment a community can get: people putting down roots and choosing to stay.

What’s coming next in Phase 3. Naturally, I had to ask about the future. Jenna couldn’t share everything, but she walked me through the direction. Phase 3 will develop the remainder of Wilden’s land, with the same intentional planning that keeps the community connected to its trails and landscape. Hidden Hills, one of the newer neighbourhoods, will be within walking distance of the future Market Square. And then there’s the part I was most excited to hear about: an elementary school.

The land has already been sold to the school district, which means families here may eventually be able to have their kids live, play, and go to school all within the community. According to Wilden’s own plans for Market Square, the village centre is envisioned as a mix of commercial and residential space, think coffee shops and gathering spots, the kind of walkable heart a community like this is built around. The final design is still being worked out, but the whole community is excited about it, and honestly, so am I.

What tips the decision toward Wilden. I asked Jenna the question a lot of buyers wrestle with: if someone is choosing between Wilden and another Kelowna neighbourhood, what’s the deciding factor? Her answer came down to the whole package, the master-planned vision, the trust and quality behind it, the location, the pride of ownership, and that overall sense of community. It’s a combination that’s genuinely hard to find elsewhere.

If you’re curious about Wilden, or weighing it against other communities in Kelowna and the Okanagan, I’d be glad to help you think it through.
